Depict! - Favorite Short Films

https://www.depict.org/2018/nuraiyah/

I liked this short film because the message was sweet and uplifting and the little girl who was starring in the film had a very uplifting and spiritual way of looking at things, despite her age, so I really enjoyed the narrative of this film. There were also some amazing shots of London and I liked how at the beginning there was a shot of the city in the day time and towards the end of the film there was a shot taken at night as it was like we were following the day with Nuraiyah. Despite this, there were shots taken in different seasons and different times of the day which shows that there was a lot of effort put in to this film. For example, at 0:21 there was a shot of her when it was snowing then the next shot was of her going down a slide in, what I presume was, Spring or Autumn. There was also a shot at 0:55 of the bright sky taken through her telescope which was cool.

This short film is in a horror genre and was really good because it was shot really well and the camera angles were really fitting when taking suspense into consideration. The editing was really well done in terms of continuity as shown at 0:19-0:22 because when the lady shouts "Hello!" the title "Echo" comes up on the screen. In addition to this, they've made sure that the positioning of the two ladies is the same when it cuts between this time. The lighting is also really good as at the beginning they play with chiaroscuro with the contrasting brightness of the snow outside and the darkness inside the tunnel, which reflects the mood of uncertainty and fear coming from within the tunnel.

This short film has a really good narrative and I thought the story line was creative. I liked how at the ending when the couple are talking about the painting it turns to an over the shoulder shot of the older man, and I like how the horror music plays at the moment that you see him. I also like how they've shot her walking away and you can see the man in the painting disappear at 0:38. It's cool how, at 0:48, he's filmed at a low angle which makes him look more aggressive and powerful and I think its really well shot because as he gets closer it makes him look bigger.

This is really well filmed because the colors are really bright and I like the fact they've kept the tones quite nude and pastel. It's cool at 0:35 when the main actor starts to lift off the ground the airy, space-like music starts up in the background which I think really reflects well with the film. I really like how it's shot from this point because when you see the main character floating upside down, as if she's in space, you can see space images in the background and this is a style/tone that you see all the way through the film. I think that the way the camera flips upside down at 0:48 is really cool as well and the fact that they've made it seem like she's in space when she's actually on Earth is pretty cool.

This was a really emotive and captivating story line and showed a more emotional side to prisoners that I don't think is really shown in the media. It was shot really well, especially the ending at 1:07 because you're left unknown as to what he's looking at until he's given the baby, so for a second you think that it could be his wife. The music fits really well with this scene, as well, because it's slow and soft and represents the emotion that he would probably be feeling; of sadness, because he can only see a limited amount of his own child's life, yet happiness because he's now a granddad. At 0:18 it's quite clever how they cast a shadow on the bruise on his face so that you can't see it until his wife touches it. I also like how short the shots are and each shot signifies a different stage of their life and it doesn't really dwell too much on his time in prison, apart from the shot with the bruise on his face.
